Vitamin D, The Sun, and Your Skin


Vitamin D is an important nutrient that is needed for strong bones, especially in older adults. Vitamin D helps our bodies’ process calcium and phosphorus that is needed for maintaining strong bones. Vitamin has a lot of emerging evidence for many health conditions. You can get vitamin D from sun exposure but the amount is inconsistent and can increase your risk of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and UV radiation from the sun has been very strongly researched to be a cause of multiple types of skin cancer.

Dietary sources of vitamin D from food (including fortified mild, cheese, yogurt, fortified cereals, and certain oily fish like salmon and tuna) or oral supplementation can provide vitamin D without the risk of skin cancer or premature aging.

Dermatologists recommend that if you are concerned about getting enough vitamin D, you should talk to you’re your doctor about getting vitamin D from food or supplements.
